LyondellBasell added several new low and high density polyethylene grades for cable applications to its line of products. Created using the company’s Hostalen ACP technology, the new PetrotheneKR52828E grade is a multimodal high density polyethylene (HDPE) suitable for medium voltage jacketing for outdoor power cables. Jacketing applications require resins with good melt strength and physical properties, including high tensile strength, elongation and good abrasion resistance. Petrothene KR52828E provides superior processability compared to standard HDPE materials which is of key importance when applying jacketing to cables. HDPE resins produced with LyondellBasell’s ACP technology have also demonstrated improved physical properties in numerous long term outdoor applications. The new Lupolen GX 4087 is a low density polyethylene (LDPE) resin suitable for medium voltage cables that distribute electrical power from generating plants and substations to transformers. Dielectric strength, the maximum voltage a material can withstand without failure of insulation properties, is a key requirement in this process and based on IEC 60243 standard tests, the grade provides excellent insulation performance when compared with other LDPE grades. Petrothene NA217080, the LDPE resin for high frequency insulated coaxial cables, offers high melt strength, melt elasticity and electrical properties. Consumers blend Alathon M5370WC HDPE with Petrothene NA217080 to achieve a balance of electrical, physical and flow properties.
